Coordinating your move

There are lots of different gears that need to work together in order for your move to be stress free. Here we break down 4 parts of your move to help start creating a timeline of what needs to be done and when.

Ordering your supplies: Once you commit to moving, start ordering your moving supplies. This includes boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and some extra thick sharpies for all those labels. The sooner you get these items the sooner you will be able to start packing items away. Make sure to donate or trash items and label the sides of every box.

Moving Quote: The best case scenario is booking your movers 2-3 months before your move. Start asking for quotes from 3-4 different companies several days before this time frame so that you can schedule in advance. Depending on the time of year you are moving, moving costs can change day to day. Ask how long the quote is valid for and what the change in price would be if you need to move it by a few days.

Utilities: About two weeks before you plan on coordinating your move, make sure to schedule the cancelation of your utilities. You’ll want the utilities to be turned off a day or two after you plan on finishing moving to give you flexibility in case you need to come back for whatever reason. Similarly, make sure to call your new utility company to have the utilities turned on in your new place as well 2 days before you move in. Ask about the final bill and keep track of the numbers in case you need to dispute anything on your final bill.

Change your address: There are a lot of places that need to be notified that you are changing your address including the post office, tax agencies, your cable company, bank, etc. Try to notify these companies 4-5 weeks before you move. Many of them are able to set a date to switch it over in advance or have online forms that can be filled out.
